Leaders of Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday announced its Second Century Campaign and plans to fully restore the interior of the historic venue.
“We are proud to announce that the Second Century Campaign launched during our 100th anniversary (in 2022) is at 73 percent of its $9.5 million goal,” said Glen Nilsen, chairman of the Orpheum Performing Arts Centre board. “Our success to date allows us to also announce that restoration of the historic theatre will begin in June of 2025.”
During an announcement on the theatre’s stage, plans for restoration were unveiled, which include restoration of the interior—stage, main auditorium, and grand balcony—while bringing back into sharp relief the Andalusian style as designed in 1922. Artisans will restore the ceilings, walls, and floors. New seats and HVAC, along with improved sound and lighting are included in the project.
“There has been significant hidden infrastructure work done over the years and it is now time to restore the theatre’s interior including all new seats,” Executive Director Stacee Olden said. “We’ve had volunteer leadership involved in the fundraising efforts and a professional team in place for restoration development. It will continue to be a special place to experience live theatre, music, comedy and more yet it will be honoring the historic features while elevating the patron experience when it opens in 2026.”

“We have been energized by the support of individuals along with foundations and the business community,” Nilsen said. “We are approaching the $7 million mark, noting the community is ready to see this theatre restored.”
“We are working against the clock,” Olden said. “To complete the restoration, the Orpheum will be closed for 12 months. We must begin the restoration in June 2025. That only leaves us nine months to raise the remaining $2.6 million for the Second Century Campaign.”
The Orpheum Theatre in Wichita is one of only 17 Orpheums standing in America. A century ago, more than 100 Orpheum theatres were in operation. The Wichita Orpheum is the last one to be restored,” said board member Janice Van Sickle. “We are in the home stretch and encourage everyone to join the effort.”
