An area resident was targeted in a “different twist on the age-old jury duty scam,” according to a news release from the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.
The resident received a voicemail from someone claiming to be a sheriff’s sergeant, instructing the resident to call back immediately. Despite suspecting the call was a scam, the resident called the number back. The person who answered said he was a sheriff sergeant and needed two surety bonds in the amount of $1,200 each to resolve “the judge’s citation and fee” for missing jury duty.
The resident subsequently found the sergeant’s name on the Linkedin.com website, which is how the scammer apparently obtained the officer’s name.
According to the DA’s Consumer Protection Division, a law enforcement organization will never call about missing jury duty and wanting someone to send money by a surety bond or cash card.
“If you receive a call like this, it’s best to just hang up,” the news release stated.
