The Wichita Police Department has activated the Raven Gunshot Detection System.
According to a news release, Raven uses acoustic sensors to detect and pinpoint gunfire in real time. It’s been in testing locally since 2022, showing improved accuracy. Testing found that up to 83% of gunfire incidents in pilot areas were never reported through traditional channels.
The system was turned on for good Friday.
“The Raven system is a key part of our broader effort to improve community safety. The system helps us respond faster and efficiently,” Chief Joe Sullivan was quoted as saying. “Real-time alerts improve officer awareness, especially in neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.”
Deployment sites were selected using data showing the highest rates of gun-related crime.
WPD began community outreach last summer, hosting town halls in every City Council district. Two more sessions followed in January and July 2023, including one at Greater Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Community feedback led to several policy changes on how Raven is used.
WPD said it will continue prioritizing transparency and community involvement as it adopts new tools to improve public safety.
