A Meals on Wheels recipient named Brent can’t say enough good things about the program, which delivers hot meals to homebound residents each weekday.
If his pets could talk, they’d probably say the same thing.
In 2022, Senior Services, Inc., which operates Meals on Wheels, launched a project called Pet Pals with start-up funds from the national Meals on Wheels America organization and volunteers from the Wichita Animal Action League. The volunteers deliver pet food and supplies to 100 Meals on Wheels recipients each month.
“If it wasn’t for Senior Services, I wouldn’t be able to keep my pets,” Brent said. “The flea-and-tick medication is extremely helpful.”
Because ongoing funding isn’t guaranteed, Senior Services, Inc., must raise money to keep Pet Pals going each year. This year’s fundraiser, called Bow Meow Bingo, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Downtown Senior Center, 200 S. Walnut. Brent, who suffers from chronic diabetes and other health issues, moved to Wichita to take care of his mother, a pet lover.
“When mom died, I had to rehome some of her pets but was able to keep a couple for myself.”
He considers his dog, Precious, and cats — Little Man, Frick and Frack — more like family than pets. Studies have shown that four-legged companions are crucial to the health and well-being of their owners.
Brent is one of 880 people currently receiving Meals on Wheels through Senior Services.
“The meals are exceptionally good, especially the roast beef,” he said. “I am grateful Meals on Wheels provides fruit cups and milk. Those items are too expensive for me to buy.”
He also appreciates the daily visits from volunteers. “They check on me every day and are wonderful, caring people.”
