MCPHERSON, Kan. —Bluestem Communities, a network of senior living and care organizations, has announced the purchase of 50 acres of land for expansion of The Cedars, one of its life plan communities. According to a news release, the land lies just east of the existing campus along North Maxwell Street in McPherson. The property is being acquired with a vision for future independent living homes to be constructed and overall continued growth of The Cedars community.
“This purchase reflects the commitment of partners who share our belief in the value of quality non-profit senior living,” said Ryan Goering, Chief Operating Officer for Bluestem Communities. “We are grateful for those whose support makes it possible for us to continue to live our mission by serving older adults in McPherson and the surrounding area.”
The purchased land was previously owned by the Gustafson family, long-time McPherson staples, who positioned the sale in a way to ensure Bluestem the opportunity to purchase it for The Cedars.
As a life plan community, The Cedars offers living and care opportunities in independent living, assisted living and long-term health care, as well as memory care, skilled nursing care and short-term rehabilitation. More than 300 residents live in all levels of care at The Cedars. It is one of the oldest senior living communities in Kansas, first started by the Church of the Brethren in the 1890’s, and locating to its permanent home in McPherson in 1953.
The Cedars became the fifth location in the Bluestem Communities network in July 2025. Other Bluestem campuses include the life plan communities of Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton, Schowalter Villa in Hesston, and Bluestem PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) in McPherson and Hutchinson.
“Bluestem Communities is excited to invest in the continued growth of The Cedars and the broader McPherson community,” said Goering. “This property gives us the opportunity to thoughtfully plan for future expansion and welcome more residents who are seeking a vibrant senior living community.”
