Investigation underway after RV fire death in east Wichita

Wichita police investigators are assisting the Wichita Fire Department after an adult person was found dead inside an RV following a fire Thursday morning in the 7600 block of East 71st Street.

According to a news release: At about 8:37 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2026, Wichita fire crews responded to the area and found an RV fully engulfed in flames. After firefighters extinguished the fire, the victim was found dead inside the RV.

Preliminary information indicates the person who called 911 had just returned to the property when he heard a loud boom. He went around a barn on the property, saw the RV on fire, called 911 and attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before fire crews arrived.

Wichita police investigators were called to assist with the investigation.

Wichita fire and police investigators are reviewing information related to severe weather conditions and lightning activity reported in the area around the time of the fire. All circumstances are being investigated as detectives and fire investigators work to determine the cause.
