Mathur a man with a vision

At right, Kansas State Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau reads a proclamation honoring Balbir Mathur, standing with cane, as his wife, Treva, and Mayor Lily Wu look on. Friends, family and art lovers came out to celebrate Mathur’s 90th birthday at the Advanced Learning Library on Dec. 13. Mathur, who founded the international anti-hunger Trees for Life organization in 1984, is now raising money to buy eyeglasses for children with vision impairments by selling his abstract paintings for $30 each, which buys two pairs of glasses. Mathur is now legally blind himself. For a gallery of his work, visit www.artconnectinghearts.org
