Mother Nature’s hot flashes, a broken AC and more summer fun

I hope by the time you’re reading this we will be having much cooler weather. As I write this, it is 103 degrees in Wichita, and it is 89 degrees in our house. No, we don’t set the thermostat that high. Our air conditioner is out. Done. Finished. Shot. Not working and will never work again.

I know it was running nonstop for days and it is old, but I swear I heard it laughing and saying, “Ha! Work me to death, and this is what you get!”

With my fingers crossed, I called a repairman, and bless his

heart, he was able to come fairly quickly. With sweat dripping off of him, he explained he could fix it, but it would probably quit again very soon. We needed a new one.

This came at a bad time because the construction on a new drainage system in the basement also required a complete redo

of the guest bedroom downstairs.

And the personal computer I’m typing on says I need a new one because old faithful here is too old to get Windows 11. Oh, and one more thing, the washing machine is making an interesting clanking noise.

But it is indeed the air conditioner that is the killer. I now have more empathy for the people in Europe, where air conditioning is rare. There have been thousands of heat-related deaths in Europe. In the United States, July was the hottest on record.

Most of us are spoiled. We go from our cool houses to our hot cars that cool down fairly quickly. But Mother Nature is having some serious hot flashes.

Summer is like a severe paper cut. You forget the pain until you get another one. We forget the heat until the dreadful season rolls around again.

Come on fall! You can bet I’m going to hug the first tree I see with colorful autumn leaves.
