Plenty of ways to wish America a happy 250th birthday

Wichita’s American250 celebration will be loud and proud.

On July 2, the Summer Concert Series at Bradley Fair concludes with a free performance by the King Cabbage Brass Band and a fireworks show starting at 9:30 p.m. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to the grassy area surrounding Bradley Fair Lake.

Also on July 2, the We the People USA 250th Celebration will take place at Union Station, with patriotic entertainment, family-friendly activities, a special lighting display and fireworks. It happens from 7:30-10 p.m.

At 9:00 am on July 4, the Veterans Memorial Park Board will host a commemoration of Independence Day at the American Revolution Memorial in Wichita’s Veterans Memorial Park. A color guard will present the colors to begin the ceremony, followed by the National Anthem, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and an Invocation. The Guest Speaker will be retired USAF Colonel John Madia, who flew B-52 bombers, C-130 transport planes and RC-130 reconnaissance planes. Following the speech and a bugle rendition of Amazing Grace, the US Marine Corps League rifle detail will fire a 3-volley salute, and the ceremony will conclude with the sounding of Taps. Limited seating will be provided, but guests may want to bring their own lawn chairs to ensure they have a place to sit.

Old Cowtown Museum will host a special Independence Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 4 featuring dancing saloon girls and temperance marches, gunfights, a medicine show, vintage baseball games and more. Admission prices can be found at oldcowtown.org.

Starting at 6 p.m. July 4, the annual Red, White & Boom celebration featuring the biggest fireworks display of all will take place. Festivities will be centered at Kennedy Plaza at Century II and across the Arkansas River at Equity Bank Park, where the Wichita Wind Surge will play the Tulsa Drillers starting at 6:35 p.m.
