After years of deferred maintenance, the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center will soon get a new roof structure and membrane to protect it from weather.
According to a news release from the city, which owns the facility, the project is expected to begin next month and be completed in the spring of 2024.
“Wichita can expect to see a lot of activity on Century II’s roof over the next few months,” said John Hale, general manager of Century II. The facility is managed by ASM Global.
The project will occur in two phases. Phase one begins with staging, safety set up and the replacement of the top ring not visible from the ground. This phase will take approximately one month. Phase two begins in October, with the replacement of the visible roof with the insulation and custom blue membrane that attempts to maintain the same signature blue color it has had since Century II was completed in 1969.
“It was important to the city that the building retain its original roof color, and over the past few months several color samples were evaluated,” Hale said.
Century II will continue to host a variety of events throughout the fall and winter, as the roof project should not interfere with day-to-day activities.
