Three new members have been added to The Active Age’s board of directors, bringing with them backgrounds in law, business, public policy and senior-related services.
Laurel Alkire is the former executive director of Senior Services, Inc., which operates the Meals on Wheels program in Wichita, four senior centers (Downtown, Linwood, Orchard Park and Northeast) and a senior employment program. She went to work for the nonprofit agency in 1987 after completing her master’s degree in gerontology from Wichita State University.
Alkire left to run the local Alzheimer’s Association for three years, then returned to Senior Services as executive director. She retired in May after more than two decades in that role.
Tim Norton was raised in northeast Arkansas, moving to Wichita in 1980 to work for Target stores, where he was a manager and trainer for 22 years. He served nine years on the Haysville City Council, four years as mayor and 16 years as District 2 Sedgwick County commissioner. Norton was mayor when the 1999 tornado hit Haysville.
Norton served as president of the Kansas Association of Counties and has served on the boards of University Way of the Plains, Exploration Place, Grace Med and other organizations.
Stewart Weaver, special counsel at Foulston Siefkin, has more than 35 years of experience helping clients with estate and tax planning and the administration of trusts and estates. Weaver grew up in Dodge City, graduated from St. Mary of the Plains College and then earned a law degree at Washburn University. Weaver, who lives in Butler County, is a member of the Wichita Estate Planning Council and has served on the boards of the Butler Community College Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Wichita.
The Active Age welcomes Alkire, Norton and Weaver and thanks two former members — Susan Armstrong and Jamee Ross — for their service.
