Woman arrested in fatal stabbing of mother, 80, in southeast Wichita

A 47-year-old woman is in custody for first-degree murder following the fatal stabbing of her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, early Friday morning in southeast Wichita.

According to an article on People magazine’s website, the suspect is Angelyn Mock, a former news anchor with a St. Louis television station. Mock was a news anchor and reporter for Fox 2 in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015, according to her her LinkedIn profile, the magazine reported.

At approximately 7:52 a.m. on Oct. 31, officers responded to a reported cutting at a residence in the 1500 block of East Crowley. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect outside the home. Inside the residence, officers found Anita Avers unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds.

Sedgwick County EMS transported the victim to St. Francis Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased at 8:26 a.m.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment before being taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for first-degree murder.

KAKE television station reported that Mock told a 911 dispatcher that she stabbed her mother “to save herself.” The station also quoted a woman as saying she was a passenger in a car that Mock approached while covered in blood, asking to use the driver’s cell phone to call police.

The investigation is ongoing.
